Roger Schmidt spoke plainly Friday afternoon at the press conference about the upcoming top match against Feyenoord. The Head Coach, who returns to the PSV bench after a suspension, is only going to Rotterdam for three points.
Under pressure
The Rotterdam formation is under pressure after three defeats in a row, according to Schmidt, something that makes Feyenoord dangerous in this situation. "They will be tremendously sharp. We have to prepare for that." Schmidt acknowledges that Feyenoord are a strong opponent, who can easily change battle plans throughout a match. "And with Berghuis, they have a creative player who can decide a duel. In any case, we are focused and will fight for victory for ninety minutes."
Doubts
Whether Denzel Dumfries and Cody Gakpo are part of that is still a question mark. Both PSV players will be checked Saturday morning. Mo Ihattaren returns to the matchday squad after being ill. That is not yet the case for Mario Götze and Nick Viergever, but Schmidt had positive words to say about the former. Götze is expected to resume group training at the end of next week.
'Super February'
The first topper month of 2021 went well, according to Schmidt. The home game against AZ was the only downside, "but the team responded well to that," the German coach says. "It is demanding to put a performance on the mat every time in busy months like this, but we are looking for that every time." After the away game against Feyenoord, 'Super February' awaits, in which PSV meets Ajax twice and Olympiakos twice, among others. "I'm looking forward to it. But for now the focus is one hundred percent on Feyenoord. I am happy with the professionalism and mentality of my players. We will be there on Sunday."
