If PSV wants to reach the main tournament of the Europa League, it will have to deal with Rosenborg BK on Thursday. The two teams already faced each other twice last season, then in the group stage of the Europa League. Gracenote found out all about the encounter.

Previous encounters
Four times before, PSV and Rosenborg BK met in a European context. Last season PSV won 1-4 in Trondheim and at Philips Stadion the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The other duel between the two teams was in the 2004-2005 Champions League season that was so successful for PSV. In the group stage, PSV won 1-0 and 1-2 from the Norwegians. PSV's goals were scored by Jefferson Farfán, DaMarcus Beasley and current Technical Director John de Jong.

Few problems with Norwegian teams
In the past, PSV fought eight duels with a Norwegian opponent. Only one of those did PSV not manage to win. That was in the European Cup II against SK Brann, in the 1996-1997 season. That duel with SK Brann is also the only time in history that PSV has been eliminated in a European tournament by a Norwegian opponent. Rosenborg BK played ten duels against a Dutch club in the club's history. Eight of them were lost to the Norwegian club. The two times Rosenborg BK stepped off the field victorious, Ajax was the opponent.

Series continue
Head coach Roger Schmidt easily turned his first European match with PSV into a victory. Schmidt's four predecessors all won their first two European duels with the club. Mark van Bommel, Phillip Cocu, Dick Advocaat and Fred Rutten all triumphed in their first two European matches.
