Sergiño Dest is and always will be PSV. The technically gifted left back was rented from FC Barcelona last season. Now PSV takes him over permanently from the Catalans. Sergiño signed a four-year contract on Saturday afternoon at PSV Campus De Herdgang.
PSV announced on Aug. 21, 2023, that it was acquiring Sergiño Dest on a rental basis from FC Barcelona. Just one day later, the left back made his starting debut for PSV, in the UEFA Champions League away game against Rangers FC (2-2). From then on, Sergiño would remain a base player. In total, he appeared in 37 official matches, in which he scored two goals and provided seven assists.
Knee injury
The 33-time United States international suffered a serious knee injury in April of this year. Sergiño is rehabilitating and will not join group training for the next few months. Director of Football Affairs Earnest Stewart therefore calls it a unique situation. "We have discussed it well internally, but Sergiño convinced us so much last season that we absolutely did not want to miss the opportunity to take him over permanently. He has so many qualities. The new situation doesn't change that."
Being important and taking titles
Sergiño has several reasons for choosing PSV. "First of all, PSV believes in me and I am greatly appreciated here. I got to know the club as incredibly warm, like I have never experienced anywhere before. Those are important aspects for someone in my situation and give me confidence that I can rehabilitate well here. Once the time comes, it is very nice that the game we play here suits me. I'm really looking forward to getting minutes again, being important and grabbing titles," the 23-year-old right-back said.
Stewart is very happy that Dest is now a permanent PSV player. "He played an important role in the 25th national title. When he came over last year, I knew we were bringing in a very good player. He has proven that several times at the highest level. His arrival is a very good start to the transfer summer."
