Head coach Roger Schmidt, after weeks full of question marks about his selection, seems to have an almost fit group at his disposal next Sunday. That is the first tentative conclusion after the players returned after the international period of the past week and a half.
Corona and fitness
Schmidt welcomed nearly all the squad players back to De Herdgang on Friday. Only Ibrahim Sangaré had not yet returned from the national team. The Ivorian will rejoin on Saturday. PSV's internationals made it through the period without any physical damage. At the moment, no (new) Corona infections have been detected at the club either, although results on that front will follow this weekend. "We hope we have the worst behind us," Schmidt spoke hopefully at De Herdgang. "A number of players are logically still a bit tired because of the international football, but fortunately everyone seems fit. The boys came back cheerful," Schmidt said.
FC Twente
PSV is on the eve of a busy period. Until the (shortened) winter break, Schmidt will play at least nine matches with his team. On Tuesday, December 22, VVV-Venlo is the last opponent of this calendar year. FC Twente is the first exactly one month earlier. That team is surprising friend and foe this season. The club has already scored 20 goals and is fifth in the Eredivisie. "It is a good team," Schmidt acknowledges. "Especially in attack, they have a lot of quality. They want to conquer the ball quickly and go straight to goal. That makes Sunday's game interesting beforehand."
