Head coach Roger Schmidt wants to take a step towards second place with PSV on Sunday. He told that Friday afternoon during the weekly meeting with the national sports media.
Step up
"We are aware that we have an important game coming up. As it looks, we have to fight for second place in the coming weeks. In Sunday's mutual duel, we can take a step toward that," Schmidt said when asked about his expectations for next Sunday.
No top game won yet
PSV has yet to win a top game in the Eredivisie this season. According to Schmidt, that is not an issue with his players. "That story is more alive in the media than with us," the Head Coach said. "The game against AZ is important to create a good starting position for second place. A season is not decided in just top games. Of course I know it has been a while since PSV won from a top Dutch team. We have shown that we can at least play good football against them. The self-confidence will rise if we also get a positive result now."
Expectations
About AZ, Schmidt spoke respectfully. "I don't know exactly what to expect. AZ is a strong and brave team that plays good football. They will want to use the weapons they have although I don't think they will do it in the same way they did during the first game in Eindhoven," said the Head Coach referring to the 3-1 defeat in January.
Development
According to Schmidt, his team is currently further along in terms of football than it was at the time. "With our style of play, we are able to find openings in defense even when an opponent emphasizes countering. Against Feyenoord we came four, maybe five times one-on-one with the opponent's goalkeeper. In my opinion, those are the biggest chances to score a goal and it says a lot about what we are capable of."
Injuries
PSV will have a wide selection Sunday. Ryan Thomas may join again. The New Zealander made his return to the training pitch this week. Timo Baumgartl will miss the match against AZ due to a knee injury. Mauro Junior and Maxi Romero are out of action this season.
