PSV deservedly won over Fortuna in Sittard. Head coach Roger Schmidt saw his team win 1-3.
Banana skin
With the topper against Ajax in the back and the one against Feyenoord in sight, the game against Fortuna Sittard was identified in advance as a potential banana skin. Fortuna, which has scored as many points as PSV (28) since Ultee's appointment as trainer/coach, therefore showed bravado against Schmidt's team. On several occasions, Yvon Mvogo saw some players from the home team pop up in front of him, but each time without having to concede a goal.
Training goals
PSV did score and went to rest with a deserved 2-0 lead thanks to Eran Zahavi. The Israeli was twice the end of nearly perfect training goals. First after preparatory work by Jordan Teze and Denzel Dumfries (over the right) and a little later in the match after build-up work by Donyell Malen and Philipp Max (over the left). PSV could have then run out to 0-3 or even 0-4, but fine chances were wasted on Malen and Zahavi.
Cox goal
In the second half, PSV's opportunities were much more sparse. From a free kick Zahavi hit the post after 65 minutes, but that was the only highlight of the second half. Fortuna did look for the tying goal, but only had one big opportunity. After the comeback of Noni Madueke and Mohamed Ihattaren that changed. Substitute Cox shot the 1-2 twenty minutes before time.
Madueke decisive
That sparked hopes of a result for the home side. But in the messy phase that followed the goal, PSV 'just' pulled out the longest straw. Three minutes before time, Madueke put an end to the uncertainty in brilliant fashion. He dribbled into the hole Ihattaren drew for him and found the cross: 1-3. PSV rises to 54 points with the win, eight more than Feyenoord who come to Eindhoven in exactly one week.
