PSV Women saw victory go to Ajax in the final match of the season in the closing stages. It ended 1-0 in Amsterdam, a result that meant nothing changed on the league table for either team. FC Twente is champion of Eredivisie Women.
No goals before halftime
The team from Amsterdam had to win Friday night and hope for a slip by FC Twente for the title, PSV is aiming for revenge for the lost cup game. Compared to that match, head coach Vuckovic had changed his team in two places for the last league game. Maran van Erp and Nadia Coolen returned to the starting line-up. The Eindhoven formation got off to an organized start and made things difficult for Ajax with its defensive style of play. Although there were hardly any clear-cut chances, the tension and fight made it an entertaining match for the spectators. Eshly Bakker came closest to scoring on behalf of Ajax with a shot on the post. The half-time score was 0-0.
Ajax scores in closing stages
After halftime, PSV came out of the locker room strong and Ajax got off with a scare when Jeslynn Kuijpers and Mauri van de Wetering successively appeared in front of goalkeeper Sarasola but fell just short in finishing. At the other end, Angela Christ intervened well when Pieëte had a chance. For a long time PSV seemed to be heading for a draw, but in the closing stages Ajax became more threatening and substitute Kelly Zeeman scored the only and winning goal in the 90th minute. As a result, PSV lost 1-0 in Amsterdam.
FC Twente champion
The result had no further impact on the rankings. PSV finished third, Ajax remained second and FC Twente crowned themselves champions of the Eredivisie Women. PSV Women fought as a team on Friday night and showed again that they can compete at the top of the league. The team now focuses on the final week of training after which the summer break will begin.
