PSV caused a resounding surprise at the Philips Stadium. Head coach Phillip Cocu's team fought for every meter and won 2-1 against Manchester United thanks in part to the fantastic support of the crowd. Héctor Moreno and Luciano Narsingh undid a Memphis goal on a memorable European night.
Serious injury Luke Shaw
Right from the kickoff, Manchester United took the weight of the match. The visitors pinned PSV in their own half and when Cocu's team lost the ball, they immediately went in search of Jeroen Zoet's goal. It resulted in the first English chance in the 7th minute through Ander Herrera. Ten minutes later, Luke Shaw emerged as the second Mancunian in PSV's penalty area. Héctor Moreno foiled a clearance from him, but his intervention was so firm that the back had to leave the field by stretcher with what appeared to be a serious injury. An action that also seemed to scare the Mexican himself.
Memphis scores in familiar territory, Moreno makes stadium explode
After the long injury treatment, PSV got into the game a bit better. The team did not create any real away chances, but seemed dangerous on the counterattack. However, Manchester United remained the superior side and it was no surprise that the visitors took the lead. Memphis set himself free in front of Zoet with a great move and then coolly slotted in the 0-1. After that goal, PSV was upset for a while. Chris Smalling even had the 0-2 on his shoe. After Lestienne lost the ball, he was able to steam through to Zoet, who in turn made a fine save. Where another goal could have been expected, it was suddenly 1-1. A fine corner kick landed on the head of Moreno, who via Blind made the Philips Stadium explode in injury time of the first half: 1-1.
Narsingh causes hurricane of noise
Immediately after halftime, it was again Manchester United that went on the attack. Thus, the first chance was also for the English and again it was Memphis who caused danger. Zoet, however, was once again. In the counter attack, PSV then posted the attack of the evening. Guardado sent Lestienne into the depths, after which the Belgian served Narsingh with a beautiful cross. If anything, his header was even more beautiful than the attack before it. Narsingh nodded to the ground, passing David de Gea for the second time this evening: 2-1. Manchester United's pressure then increased yet again, but Zoet kept his goal clean time after time. So clean that the first three-peat in the UEFA Champions League was a fact after Rizzoli's final whistle.
