If Roda JC Kerkrade meets PSV tonight for the KNVB Cup match at Philips Stadium, it could end up in a special row. A row that so far includes only Ajax and NAC Breda.
Three consecutive wins over PSV
Indeed, these are the only two teams to date that have managed to win three cup encounters in a row from PSV. Ajax managed that four times between 1992 and 2006, NAC Breda three times between 1994 and 2007. It should be noted that losing on penalties is considered a draw.
1976: Ralf Edström shoots PSV to cup win against Roda JC
Eleven times before, PSV played for the cup against Roda JC Kerkrade. PSV won the first nine encounters, but the last two wins went to Limburg. Between these eleven duels there was one final. In 1976, PSV won the cup because Ralf Edström scored the only goal of the match in the extension. That was PSV's third KNVB Beker at the time; now the club has nine. Roda JC can counter that with the two cups in 1997 and 2000.
Long not lost in first round
PSV has not been eliminated in the first round of the cup tournament since 2007. Back then, the non-playing Manuel da Costa was drafted and that resulted in a regulation 3-0 victory for Jong sc Heerenveen. The last time PSV really lost in the first round of the cup tournament was longer ago: in the 1999/2000 season Vitesse was too strong with 2-0.
