If PSV wins Saturday night against Excelsior, it will be the thirteenth consecutive away win for the club. That would be a unique achievement, putting PSV's own record from the golden year of 1988 out of the books. PSV has been unbeaten in away games for more than a year. The last loss dates from September 19 last year, when Heracles Almelo was too strong 2-1.
Raising records
It shows how untouchable PSV is in away games this calendar year. The club scored at least two goals in each of its last 12 away games in the Eredivisie, and that too is a new Eredivisie record. So that may increase even further in the upcoming match. In addition, PSV scored at least once in each of its last 33 away matches in the Eredivisie, a club record. Only sc Heerenveen has had a longer run. Between 1995 and 1998, the Frisians scored 46 away matches in a row. The difference between away and home matches is therefore striking. PSV scored 10 of its 11 goals in the Eredivisie this season on foreign soil.
At least three goals
If we only look at away games against Excelsior in recent years, the numbers become even more impressive if possible. Indeed, in the past five editions of Excelsior - PSV in the Eredivisie, PSV always scored at least three goals. If PSV pulls that off again on Saturday, Excelsior will be the only club with such poor numbers against PSV. At the moment, it still has to share that dubious honor with FC Volendam.
Own goals
Last season, PSV won 3-1 over Excelsior in Rotterdam on Jan. 27. Luuk de Jong, Jorrit Hendrix and Luciano Narsingh scored the goals. Jeffrey Bruma scored an own goal just before time. A season earlier, PSV also scored an own goal at Woudestein. Then Luuk de Jong was the unfortunate one. PSV did win then, 3-2.
Luuk and Siem Speaking of Luuk de Jong: Saturday's match may be the first match in which Luuk and Siem de Jong can be admired in the same club shirt. Previously, the two did play together in De Graafschap's C youth team, and in Oranje they once played together in the second half of the friendly against Bayern Munich.
