PSV has opened up Armando Obispo 's contract and extended it through the summer of 2025. The 22-year-old defender signed a new PSV contract on Friday evening.
Breakthrough
The Boxtel-born Obispo is experiencing the year of his breakthrough at PSV this season. Of all the squad players, the central defender has so far featured most often for the club, for which he has played since 2006-2007. Obispo, from the same line-up as teammates Cody Gakpo and Jordan Teze, started at the time in F1 and went through all the senior youth teams before making his professional debut with Young PSV in the 2016-2017 season. A season later, Obispo made his debut in PSV 1. After a season on loan at Vitesse, he has been a permanent part of the A-selection since 2020-2021. Last year he made five appearances on behalf of PSV due to injury. This season the tally stands at nine matches.
De Jong: development draws mentality
Director of Football Affairs John de Jong is pleased that the Brabander has committed his future to PSV and praises Obispo's development. "Armando has started the season very strongly after he still had to fight his way back from a serious injury last year to his own disappointment, which kept him sidelined for a long time," De Jong responded. "That marks his mentality. The development he has gone through since then and showed earlier makes us proud within PSV. It fits within our philosophy to reward him for this."
Obispo: a lot of confidence
For Obispo, the contract feels like the next step in his career at the club. "This expresses a lot of confidence," he said. "I'm still at the beginning of my time here at PSV. It's the first time I've played several games in a row. I was hoping for that last season, but that didn't happen because of an injury. It was a difficult year, but I'm back and ready for new steps at PSV."
