Last sixteen unbeaten
The last sixteen times PSV kicked off a new season at the Philips Stadium, the team remained unbeaten. In this series, only VVV in 2009 (3-3) and FC Groningen in 1984 (1-1) managed to take a point from Eindhoven. The fourteen other matches were won. The last time PSV lost the first game of the new season at Philips Stadium was in 1971. MVV won 1-0. For those in the know: Willy Brokamp scored the goal for the Maastricht side. PSV does not often lose in its own stadium in the Eredivisie. PSV is unbeaten at home in 31 Eredivisie matches in a row. The last defeat dates back to September 18, 2016, when Feyenoord won 1-0 in Eindhoven.
Valuable defensive acquisitions
With purchases Denzel Dumfries and José Angeliño, PSV brought in two of the three most valuable defenders of the past Eredivisie season. Dumfries accounted for three goals and seven assists, Angeliño for three goals and six assists. Santiago Arias, who left for Atlético Madrid this summer, completes the top three. Like Angeliño, the Colombian was good for three goals and six assists.
Mixed preparation FC Utrecht
Head coach Jean-Paul de Jong's team started the preparation for the new season well with three victories. Amateur club DHSC (9-1) , Saturday third division club DESTO (0-14) and Ross County (2-0) were defeated. Red Bull Salzburg was too strong 1-0 a week later. Three days later the team did manage to win again against Arsenal Tula from Russia (2-1). This turned out to be the last victory of the preparation. There were no wins against Kasimpasa (4-1), Portsmouth (1-1), Levante (2-2) and Al-Nasr SC (1-1).
