Afterwards, Steven Bergwijn was the first to acknowledge that PSV's play needs to improve, but cherished the three points his two goals earned. "Winning is winning," said the match-winner against Sparta Rotterdam (1-2).
Goal of the year
Shortly before halftime, Bergwijn helped PSV overcome a deadlock by shooting the 1-1 from distance into the crossbar, but his second goal in particular (a peal on a pass from Luuk de Jong) was applauded afterwards. "Goal of the year?" the winger repeated a question from FOX Sports reporter Toine van Peperstraten. "It would be nice. I played a good game today. Last week I missed a few chances, today it went well. I'm happy with the goals and the three points. Those are the most important."
Closer to the goal
That was the opinion of head coach Phillip Cocu, who congratulated his striker on his part in the win. "We always keep believing in it, even when we are behind. Today it was Steven who brought us victory with two fantastic goals. We are another step closer to our goal." Cocu was less satisfied with his team's play. "We were not sharp, did not anticipate well and because of that we were behind very quickly. We did wake up, slowly it got a bit better although we didn't get many chances. Also because Sparta was very much in a group. After a good phase and the 1-2 it was mediocre again. In the end we were forced to keep everything closed again."
