Menno Koch went through almost all of PSV's youth training, but left the club in 2015 for NAC Breda. First on a rental basis and later permanently. During the last meeting between NAC and PSV last season, Koch played for the Breda side. A preview with a pedigreed PSV player: 'I will always be a supporter.'
Last encounter
"We quickly got the 1-0 against, but then stayed in the game for a long time," Koch looks back on that last game. In the end, Donyell Malen provided the 2-0 victory. "PSV had a strong season and prior to a game like that you know it's going to be difficult," Koch said.
Belgium
These days, the defender can be admired in the Jupiler Pro League with KAS Eupen. Koch is enjoying himself in Belgium. "It's a nice league with good players," he says. The team is currently 13th in the league table and is ambitious. "After a difficult start, things are starting to get better lately. The goal is maintenance, but we are trying to finish as high as possible," Koch said. The highest final ranking the club has listed is thirteenth.
Differences
Koch also faced PSV during last winter break's training camp in Qatar. With KAS Eupen he won that friendly 2-1. The defender played the full ninety minutes. According to Koch, there are some differences between the Eredivisie and the Jupiler Pro League. "The Eredivisie is a lot better tactically and technically. On the other hand, things are a bit more physical in Belgium. I have also noticed that chances are handled a bit more cold-bloodedly in this league."
'Warm memories '
Koch still cherishes fond memories of his time at PSV. "My debut was a very beautiful moment that I still like to think back on, but I have experienced so many great moments at PSV that it is difficult to choose one. In youth I won many awards, but also the championship in 2016 and winning the Johan Cruijff Schaal were absolute highlights. I owe a lot to PSV and it will always be a big part of my life. I will always follow the club and remain a supporter."
Prediction?
Koch will watch the cup duel between his old clubs intently. "I definitely still follow both clubs. This season I watch PSV a bit with a double feeling. It is unfortunate that they are not where they want to be. That may also have something to do with the departure of defining players and that is difficult to absorb," he said. Nevertheless, Koch is confident that PSV will turn the tide soon. "There are enough qualities in the squad. So I definitely see it working out and I hope it happens soon." Starting, then, with the away game against NAC Breda. "Despite NAC also having a turbulent period behind them, I see a good squad with nice players who are eager. In addition, an 'evening at NAC' guarantees battle. Nevertheless, I think PSV has enough qualities to continue," Koch concluded.
