Psv U21 suffered its second defeat of the season Friday night. Coach Pascal Jansen's promising team went down 1-0 in Helmond against Helmond Sport.
Goalless
For the neutral spectator, the first half was little full of spoilers. With 21-year-old Jordy de Wijs as the most experienced man, a very young Young PSV could do very little in attacking terms, partly due to Helmond Sport's high pressure. The Helmond players, in turn, knew little to do with the slight field advantage. Apart from a few harmless shots from distance, the home team simply did not get any further. That it was 0-0 at halftime was no big surprise.
Debutants cannot avoid defeat
All the more surprising that the score was 1-0 after only five minutes in the second half. After Braber bounced off the post in the first minute after the break, his teammate Höcher saw his effort hit the post and into the goal. The midfielder was free to take a shot from the edge of the box and put the 1-0 behind Van Osch. After that goal the game came to life, although Young PSV were hardly in any danger. Once, substitute and debutant Cody Gakpo was dangerous. The 17-year-old striker forced goalkeeper Kaya to come out, got around him with a bit of luck, but in the little time he had he could not find the goal. Another debutant, Michal Sadilek was also close, but he came up just short of a rebound after a brilliant save by Kaya.
Lineup Young PSV
Van Osch; Van Vlerken (61/Abels), Van Bruggen, De Wijs, Alberto; Kardes (54/Gakpo), Rommens, Paal; Verreth, Gudmundsson, Blummel (76/Sadilek).
