Both teams started the match brightly. After five minutes of play, Maxime Delanghe was put to the test by the Helmond players, but he was sharp enough to keep his goal clean. Young PSV took control themselves and created three good chances in ten minutes. The first two attempts were by Nigel Thomas, both times his shots hit the Helmond goalkeeper. Then came another opportunity for Fode Fofana who failed to control from close range. Mathijs Tielemans also tried his luck. A hard shot went over. Helmond Sport looked for another chance for the missed chances, but defensively Dennis Vos managed to block a dangerous moment. After more than half an hour, the opener fell into the net. Delanghe was hopeless with a hard shot into the far corner, 1-0 for the home team. Minutes later, Joel Piroe tried to equalize. A crafty chip went just over the goal. The Young PSV defense was tested in the first half, but there was no equalizer.
Fighting spirit
Helmond Sport came out of the dressing room fierce, but again Delanghe proved difficult to pass. A distance shot was blocked and the rebound was also prey to the Belgian. The search for the equalizer was in full swing, a shot by Mathias Kjølø and a close-range effort by Tielemans kept the Helmond players on their toes. After an hour of playing time, control was mainly for Helmond Sport. A double change from Young PSV with Yorbe Vertessen and Kristófer Kristinsson should bring more attacking opportunities. A hard low shot by the Icelander almost brought the tie back, but the Helmond goalkeeper showed good reflexes. Tielemans also made himself heard again. A shot from close range lacked control and went over the goal. Young PSV did not want to surrender to the deficit and the fight for the equalizer continued. From a long ball, Mees Kreekels managed to hit a clever cross that just failed to find an end. Despite the fighting spirit the comeback did not come, the Helmond Sport goal was the only one of the match.
