Psv U21 has taken possession of fourth position in the Jupiler League. A 1-0 win over MVV Maastricht sufficed Monday night for coach Dennis Haar's pledge team.
Game underway after twenty minutes
After twenty minutes passed almost silently, Donyell Malen took his first shot at an enemy goal. The outfielder, making his debut for PSV 1 against PEC Zwolle on Saturday, subtly cut inside, curled towards the cross but saw goalkeeper Verrips save. That action was the prelude to more danger for both goals. Room prevented a Maastrichter lead several times by reacting attentively to the danger and at the other end Verrips was at his post when Bram van Vlerken and Cody Gakpo were able to strike from close range. A Laros Duarte shot not much later, however, left the MVV goalkeeper without a chance.
Artful Gakpo unanswered
Thus Young PSV took a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the first fifteen minutes of the second half, Sam Lammers (on a pass from Malen) and Malen himself (after an individual action) then had good chances to double that score. At the other end, MVV Maastricht could not take advantage of a slip by Armando Obispo thanks to Eloy Room sprinting quickly out of his goal. In the closing stages, Gakpo then offered substitute Nikolai Laursen the chance to decide the match. The Dutch striker served the Dane after a piece of art, but then saw him miss. That miss remained without consequence.
