Psv U21 failed to convert a chance against Go Ahead Eagles into a win. Coach Dennis Haar's team, which at times played well, ended up 1-1 in Deventer.
Malen excels
Already in the early stages of the match, Go Ahead Eagles and Young PSV fiercely challenged each other. Donyell Malen could have given PSV the lead after only three minutes, simply tapping in a Nikolai Laursen cross, but his effort only grazed the crossbar. Moments earlier, a jumble of shots after a corner kick had already created danger for Deventer. Yet it was Young PSV that slowly but surely imposed its will on the Eagles. Especially thanks to standout player Malen, who constantly occupied the home team's defense with clever runs. Not surprisingly, Malen opened the scoring after 27 minutes by taking advantage of fumbles in the Go Ahead defense: 0-1.
No reward
Remarkably, that was all that remained before halftime, as Young PSV had plenty of chances for more. In the second half the game was more balanced, although the best chances remained for Haar's promising team. Ramon Pascal Lundqvist, for example, hit the ball hard against the post after an hour, after which Philippe Rommens found the fists of goalkeeper Stevens in the rebound. At the other end, Beltrame was luckier. The home midfielder saw his distance shot not handled well by Yanick van Osch and ended up in the goal: 1-1. Via Malen (just over) and Laursen (post) Young PSV made the most of the victory, but there were no more goals.
