The PSV quartet at the World Cup O20 (v) has reached the semifinals. Tonight, in front of 37,000 yellow-clad supporters, host country Colombia was eliminated via penalty shootout. Veerle Buurman, Emma Frijns, Robine Lacroix and Fleur Stoit all four were in the starting lineup.
PSV goal
The Netherlands seemed to be in a football storm early in the match. With one goal against, the damage remained limited and there was no reason to panic yet. The 1-1 fell at a time when the Netherlands got into the match a little better. It was a real PSV goal. A free kick by Emma was headed by Veerle at the second post and Fleur ran the ball in. Fleur scored the winning goal against France in the eighth final.
In the second half, the Netherlands took much more control. Colombia's 2-1 came out of nowhere. In the final minutes of the match, Orange O20 managed to make it 2-2, forcing an extension.
Penalty series
In the extension it was mainly a case of holding back. The Netherlands struggled to get a penalty series out of it. Here goalkeeper and captain Femke Liefting was the hero. The three Colombian penalties all went nowhere. Two were taken by the goalkeeper and one she looked over. The Dutch penalties all went in and therefore the Netherlands won the series 3-0.
Semifinal
The Netherlands will meet the losing finalist of the previous World Cup, Japan, in the semifinals. Kickoff for that match is at 3 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19. The other semifinal is between North Korea and the United States.
