PSV will play FC Volendam in the eighth final of the KNVB Beker at the Kras Stadion on Tuesday night. The home team reached the last sixteen of the cup tournament without having played a single game, while PSV eliminated De Graafschap in the second round.
Mutual result
Five times before, PSV and FC Volendam faced each other in the KNVB Beker. In four of the five confrontations PSV was victorious. Only in 1972 was the club eliminated in the fishing village. The most recent edition took place in the 2017-2018 season. After extension, PSV won the cup, through goals by Marco van Ginkel and Hirving Lozano. For FC Volendam, the game against PSV is only the first cup game of the season. The game against ODIN'59 was canceled in the first round, after which Wim Jonk's team was unlocked in the second round.

For PSV it is important to continue the line against De Graafschap. The last two times the club faced a First Division team in the eighth finals, it was the final. Furthermore, PSV only reached the quarterfinals once in the last four cup seasons. If the team wants to remain active on three fronts, it must win in North Holland.
Schmidt knows what cup football means
That, at least, is what Head Coach Roger Schmidt will strive for. He has already won the national cup twice in his coaching career. In 2013-2014 he took the Cup of Austria with RB Salzburg and in 2018 he won the Cup of China with Beijing Guoan. Should PSV get far in the cup tournament, Georg Kessler may have a successor. After all, Kessler is the only German coach who managed to win the KNVB Cup. He did so in the early 1980s with AZ.
