With seven matches, April is the busiest month yet for PSV's promise team. The kickoff of the decisive month was taken in Alkmaar against the AZ peers. Young PSV was the superior side for a long time, but after a hectic final phase, they finally went home empty-handed.
Opposing party
With the edges of the pitch still covered in snow, the game kicked off Friday evening at the AFAS Training Complex. PSV immediately took the initiative and was soon threatening towards the AZ goal. Yet it was the home team that broke the game open with a goal. Moments later, the Alkmaar players almost scored an own goal, when a defender mishandled a cross. Goalkeeper Hobbie Verhulst was just able to tap the ball out of the crossbar. Young PSV remained the dominant side after that, but could not avoid going to rest with a deficit.
Hectic final phase
After halftime, Young PSV re-entered the field knowing that it had the most and best chances in the first half. With that in mind, Ruud van Nistelrooy's team went on the attack again. The equalizer seemed a matter of time for a while. The minutes passed without any goals and a final offensive was launched to force an equalizer, until Jenson Seelt was forced to take down a broken player. A red card and an exploited free kick were the retaliation and so it was done, Young PSV went home empty-handed. In four days, at home against FC Volendam, it will get another chance to recover.
