Atlético certainly no weaker than last year

When PSV take on Atlético Madrid on Tuesday night, coach Diego Simeone will field largely the same team he did last year in the eighth finals. Back then, the Madrilenians drew 0-0 twice against PSV. Atlético eventually won on penalties and made it to the final, in which city rival Real was too strong on penalties. A closer look at PSV's first European opponent this season.

Doubts
Before last weekend, there were doubts about Atlético's form. With draws against relegation candidates Alavés and Leganés, the Madrilenians made little impression. Would the squad be fit enough for the match in Eindhoven? Last weekend, coach Diego Simeone's team removed much of the doubt by knocking Celta de Vigo aside 4-0.

New acquisition
Antoine Griezmann is still Madrid's star player. The Frenchman has continued to develop since the last meetings with PSV. He stole the show at the European Championship at home, crowning himself the tournament's top scorer with six goals. He was the only player to score more than three times. For the striker position next to him, Diego Simeone can choose between Fernando Torres and newcomer Kévin Gameiro. For many millions, the Frenchman came over this summer from Sevilla, where he scored 29 goals last season.

Defense still strong
In midfield, playmaker Koke has remained, despite interest from England. Like last year, the strength of Simeone's squad lies mainly in defense. Players like Diego Godín and Juanfran ensure that there are few clubs in the world against whom it is harder to score than against Atlético Madrid. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak has also developed into one of the best goalkeepers on European fields.
