PSV plays the first match in the TOTO KNVB Beker against GVVV. The team from Veenendaal is active in the second division, the highest amateur level in the Netherlands. So high time for an introduction to our opponent.
Cup adventure
GVVV fought hard to reach this round of the KNVB Cup. The team started the series with a victory over Kozakken Boys, one of the teams from their own league. The next opponent, Helmond Sport, plays one division higher. Yet the team from Veenendaal managed to win 2-1 at home. Thus a place in the second round was established, where PSV is the opponent.
Berry Powel
Best known man with the Veenendalers is Berry Powel. The former Eredivisie player has played for ADO Den Haag, FC Groningen, De Graafschap, Heracles Almelo and Roda JC, among others. With eleven goals in the league and two in the cup the veteran is currently GVVV's top scorer.
2011-2012
GVVV had a strong cup tournament in the 2011-2012 season. In the third round of the tournament the team was paired with Eredivisionist Excelsior, but the Veenendaal team managed to stunt by winning 0-3 and advancing to the next round. There, Sparta Rotterdam was the opponent. The game ended in a draw, but GVVV drew the longest after penalty kicks. In the quarterfinals AZ was the next obstacle, but this team proved to be too big. GVVV took the lead after ten minutes of play, but AZ hit back and won 2-1. It was ultimately PSV who won the KNVB Cup that season.
