Long-awaited and finally there: on Sunday, PSV will play directly for the title of national champion. With one point or more, PSV is unbeatable for the competition. Here you can read all about the championship match.
A draw is enough to win the 25th national title in club history. The previous three championship matches at the Philips Stadium were won by at least three goals difference. The last time was on April 15, 2018, when PSV won 3-0 over Ajax. Luuk de Jong, Gastón Pereiro and Steven Bergwijn shot PSV to its 24th national title at the time.
Retrospective
Sparta Rotterdam will undoubtedly want to postpone the championship celebration. The current number eight of the Eredivisie took a point from Eindhoven last year. Then the game ended in a scoreless draw. The four editions before that, PSV won each time with a minimal difference (2-1, 1-0, 1-0 & 1-0). They are currently running an unbeaten streak of 23 league games against their opponent in Round 32.
Earlier this season, PSV won the game in Rotterdam by large numbers (4-0). Peter Bosz 's formation only started scoring after halftime: 51' Malik Tillman, 59' Johan Bakayoko, 80' Yorbe Vertessen and 88' Luuk de Jong. In total, PSV shot thirty times on goal.
Record hunt
With 84 points and a goal difference of +86 the A-selection is on course to become the best Eredivisie squad ever. That record is currently still in the hands of Johan Cruijff's Ajax, who became champions in 1971-1972 with 93 points and a goal difference of +84. PSV must win all three remaining matches to match the points total. With five points, PSV has broken its own club record of 88 points.
In addition, there stands a low record of eighteen goals against in one seison. Walter Benítez has had to concede seventeen goals so far.
There are also a number of players chasing (personal) records, as Jordan Teze could become the first winger, since Jetro Willems, with at least 10 assists in a single Eredivisie season. Joey Veerman had a share in 18 league goals this season and could improve his personal record with a goal or assist.
