The sixth round of play in the UEFA Champions League group stage means a home duel with Arsenal FC for PSV. Although the cards are already shuffled for the knockout phase of the European tournament, PSV can go one for club record against the English team. For that, Head Coach Peter Bosz 's formation needs a win.
The adventure in the group stage began against Arsenal FC. At the Emirates Stadium, the London club was too strong for the main squad: it became 4-0 for 'The Gunners'. Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus made it 3-0 at halftime. Former Eredivisie player Martin Ødegaard scored a fourth goal after halftime.
Just not enough
It has not been long since both clubs kicked off a European friendly. Last season, PSV met Arsenal FC in the group phase of the UEFA Europa League. Then, too, Arsenal FC emerged victorious in London (1-0), but PSV was supreme at Philips Stadion. Joey Veerman shot the team into the lead and captain Luuk de Jong signed for the second goal. As now, the Londoners finished first in the pool with PSV as runner-up.
Previous victory
Last season's win at Philips Stadium is not the only home victory over Arsenal FC. In the 2006-2007 season, PSV also walked off the field victorious. Edison Méndez was the only striker in the 1-0 win over the Englishmen. PSV, at the time with Ronald Koeman at the helm, qualified for the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League by drawing 1-1 in the away match.
Qualified
PSV has qualified for the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2015-2016. That was decided in the previous round of play: head coach Peter Bosz 's formation came back cleverly from a 2-0 deficit on a visit to Spain's Sevilla FC and won 3-2. Having also managed to win the last home game against RC Lens, it has won consecutive matches in the prestigious tournament for the first time since the September-October 2006 period (three). Then Girondins de Bordeaux and Galatasaray SK (2x) were defeated.
Hunt for club record
With eight points from five games, another club record can be set tonight. Indeed, that will take the team to eleven points, a number never before achieved in the UCL. The current record stands at ten points; that number was tapped five times. Likewise in the last UEFA Champions League win over: then PSV kept 1 Manchester United (eight) and CSKA Moscow (four) below them.
Top scorer Luuk
Luuk de Jong has no trouble scoring goals this season. With ten league goals and seven European goals to his name, he is well underway this season. If the center striker scores on Tuesday night, he will be PSV's new UEFA Champions League all-time top scorer. He currently shares the club record with Ruud van Nistelrooij with eight goals.
