For the sixth time, PSV and Feyenoord will kick off the football season with the battle for the Johan Cruijff Schaal. PSV goes into the game as the record holder in terms of number of participations and victories. The traditional season opener has been won thirteen times by PSV, while Feyenoord went home with the supercup four times.
With 20 participations and 13 victories, PSV carries the title of record holder. Last year, PSV was 5-3 too strong for Ajax. Debutant Guus Til made history by becoming the first player with a hat-trick in the Johan Cruijff Schaal. Cody Gakpo (65') and Xavi Simons (90+1') also found the net in the Amsterdam Arena.
A year earlier, PSV beat the Amsterdammers 4-0. The goals then came from Noni Madueke, Yorbe Vertessen and Mario Götze. Should PSV win Friday against Feyenoord, it will be the second time in club history that the Johan Cruijff Schaal has been won three times in a row. The previous run of three dates from 1996 to 1998.
Previous encounters
Already five times PSV took on Feyenoord in a duel for the Johan Cruijff Schaal. Three times PSV ran away with the prize (1992, 2008, 2016) and twice Feyenoord won (1991, 2018). In the latter encounter, penalty kicks brought the decision. Of the current selections, Luuk de Jong, Mauro Júnior and Justin Bijlow were in action then. Lutsharel Geertruida and Jordan Teze were on the bench.
De Jongs' milestone
When Luuk de Jong is in action at the Johan Cruijff Schaal, it will be his seventh appearance in the supercup. He currently shares the record of six appearances with Ronald Waterreus, Ulrich van Gobbel and Daley Blind. He now has the chance to surpass them. With five wins, the striker has won the Johan Cruijff Schaal more often than Feyenoord (four).
Three goals
Luuk de Jong and Guus Til are among the players with a record three goals in the Johan Cruijff Schaal. They share this along with former PSV players Mateja Kežman, Phillip Cocu and Jeremain Lens. Jari Litmanen also managed to achieve this number.
Red and white debut
Reinforcements Ricardo Pepi and Noa Lang are players who could make their official debuts for PSV in this game. Also Isaac Babadi, from PSV's own PSV Academy, could debut in the game against Feyenoord. For the sixth time, the battle for this award will be played at De Kuip.
