PSV started the match strongly and had several opportunities in the early stages. However, these opportunities were not well played. In the eighth minute FC Utrecht had the first chance, but the ball went wide. One minute later the visitors did take the lead. After a ball through the center of PSV's defense, an FC Utrecht player rounded the PSV goalie and tapped in the 0-1. After this opening goal FC Utrecht took control. PSV had to go back and the visitors got some chances. Niek Schiks made two saves in this phase which kept PSV in the match. In the last ten minutes of the first half PSV got back into the game. PSV created some opportunities but was not accurate enough in the finishing. With 0-1 both teams went into the break.
PSV started the second half well and within two minutes the score was level again. A corner by Milan Govaers was headed in by Yaël Gil y Muinos, 1-1. Ten minutes after half-time PSV took the lead. After a FC Utrecht corner was deflected the ball went to Iggy Houben, he rounded the FC Utrecht defender and shot the ball into the far corner, 2-1. FC Utrecht then went in search of the equalizer and got several opportunities. In the 56th minute the visitors had a good chance to equalize, but the PSV goalie saved the effort. PSV then regained the initiative and in the 63rd minute PSV put the game away for good. Milan Govaers put Iggy Houben in position with a nice pass. He again outplayed the defender and shot the 3-1. PSV had a few more chances in injury time but no more goals were scored. The final score was 3-1.
