Wilhelmina Boys forces PSV to the limit
After last week's cancellation, PSV F1 could become champion again today. But they had to deal with the Wilhelmina Boys (WB) from Best. Not the least of opponents as WB is the only competitor for the title. In the home game (4-0) PSV had already been warned by this opponent.
It was WB who came out of the starting blocks the strongest. PSV was actually forced backwards, but from the first razor-sharp counter it was Arne who scored the 0-1.
Those who thought the goal would be liberating were disappointed. PSV thought they could make it, but WB clearly thought otherwise. So much strong opposition, that is something else. Normally the 3rd gear is sufficient, but WB was clearly of a different caliber and forced PSV to give the maximum. All this with the excitement of a championship match (for many players the first time) and you can guess that a gripping match was created.
Halfway through the first half, hesitant action in defense was mercilessly punished by WB. Merijn managed to turn away the first effort but a WB player was alert in the rebound. Later, when a free kick slammed past the goal, PSV found themselves trailing 2-1.
With this score the break started. Would the banner have been made for nothing, and what about the enormous celebration cake? And all those parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters. Would they have come for nothing?
Coach Bastiaan, as always, took his men aside and was clear with the assignment for the second half: "Show what you've got, and show that you are a real PSV player."
Fortunately for the large PSV supporters, this was picked up very well. Early in the second half, they managed to quickly turn the 2-1 deficit into a 2-6 lead with flashy and aggressive play. Joop and Davy in particular were not so lucky, otherwise their unbridled effort would also have been rewarded with a goal.
With this large lead the concentration disappeared and WB took advantage of this again. They did not let it get much further than two more goals. With the 4-6 score on the board, PSV saved the highlight for last. Arne scored the final score 4-7 in fabulous fashion via a diving save.
After the final signal the boys flew into each other's arms and the championship was celebrated loudly.
The excitement of a real top match (thanks WB) came out in full force.
After this, the highlights followed each other in rapid succession. Flowers for the trainers, a speech from PSV, a real champion's trophy, champagne, taking a shower with your clothes, going back together in one bus, the reception with many horns in the PSV canteen, the celebration cake, the champion's mug and trophies and finally the delicious French fries.
Today we enjoyed this close-knit team to the fullest again. The match was a very good lesson for the 2nd half of the season, where the opposition (E-pupils) will be at least equal to today.
But Bastiaan has been trusted to prepare the boys for this.
If the previously canceled game against Nuenen still goes ahead, they can also hunt for the 100-goal mark.
