The report
After the midweek cup victory at Feyenoord, the fifth league round was already on the program. Vitesse visited De Herdgang. A team that has so far played twice at home and twice away. Both home games were won. But both away games did not give the Arnhemmers a single point. Could this be an auspicious omen for PSV?
The start was dramatic. After five minutes it was already 0-2. Whereas last Tuesday PSV ran into a goal after just over a minute, this time it was a goal after only 35 seconds. PSV seemed to be lulled to sleep by the lovely autumn sunshine, but now they had to chase the ball. And they succeeded. For in the 8th minute Chahid el Allachi scored the tying goal. A free kick from Koen Jansen was laid back by Shi-jon Martina and Chahid did not think twice and hit the ball beautifully: 1-2. A few minutes later it was almost even when the Arnhem goalkeeper made a good save on a Iggy Houben effort. The ensuing rebound was shot over by Matteo Dams. Vitesse played easier football in that phase and had fast forwards. They also won most of the duels. It was waiting for a Vitesse goal rather than an equalizer. PSV got away well twice about ten minutes before halftime when Vitesse first shot outside the post and Luc Netten later had to clear a ball from the line. Five minutes before halftime, Vitesse scored when they easily played through the PSV defense to make it 1-3. Because just before halftime Iggy scored the 2-3 after a pass from Ruben van Bommel, the second half became exciting.
PSV had slightly more opportunities in the second half, but it was all 'just not there' today. Milan Govaers hit the post from distance after a good, pressed shot and Iggy almost curled a ball into the far corner. Midway through the second half, Vitesse increased its lead to 2-4 when a flank ball was headed in from close range. PSV lost it for a while and were lucky that Vitesse did not go further ahead. With eight minutes left on the clock, PSV came closer. A corner by Sven Simons was cleverly headed in by Jesper Uneken. What followed was a particularly tumultuous and enthralling finale. PSV had three big chances to equalize. First a shot by Iggy went narrowly wide, then a PSV goal was cancelled (because of a nudge?) and finally the Vitesse goalkeeper turned away a Jesper header in fabulous fashion.
There was no more scoring. PSV lost its first official game this season and Vitesse won its first away win in the league. And there was nothing wrong with that. Next Saturday the away game against ADO Den Haag is on the program.
