On Sunday, PSV C1 had to face NAC Breda. A strange day for youth to play. The weather conditions were fine: lovely autumn weather with a gentle breeze. It shouldn't be down to that. But it was PSV C1's 3rd away game. And when it comes to playing away games, the C1 shows the same picture as the first team...... as the first two games ended in a 0-0 draw and a 2-1 defeat. Besides, NAC is always a tough team to fight. A team on the league table that had only one less than PSV in points, but had a much less goal difference: 8 for and 12 against vs PSV 19 for and 7 against. A difficult opponent to gauge on paper.
PSV kicked off at 11:30 a.m. (winter time). And at 11.31 a.m. (still winter time) PSV kicked off again, because it took 20 seconds before the opening goal was scored. Talk about starting sharp... Somehow, PSV still couldn't make a fist of things after this quickly accumulated deficit. A kind of spring sluggishness seemed to have spread over the team. Result of the sunshine and the changing of the clock? The fact was that the clock had been set back, and PSV was behind.
Indeed, after 6 minutes it was 2-0. The Breda striker got the dropped ball at his feet around the 16 meters, did not think twice and curled the ball beautifully into the right cross. Brilliant goal! After this disappointment, PSV got a bit more grip on the match. NAC took a back seat and was happy to leave the ball to the Eindhoven team in order to create danger from their fast forwards. PSV did too little with the many ball possession. The pace was too slow to surprise NAC, and when we did get in front of the goal once it lacked sharpness. Because despite everything, PSV had the perfect chance to score the tying goal via several players. At the other end, it was goalkeeper Aaron van Engelen who kept PSV on their toes by preventing the 3-0 just before halftime. A few minutes later, in the very last minute of the official playing time of the first half, it was finally PSV who scored. On the left, Karim Bannani outsmarted his opponent and laid the ball wide for Matthias Verreth, who scored (albeit in two instances). A great moment to score just before halftime, of course! In injury time Matthias had another chance to make it 2-2 after a good cross from Roel van Linschoten. The Breda goalkeeper had a narrow escape.
In the second half PSV had to give it their all to avoid losing a point in Breda. And it created several chances and opportunities. But the ball just wouldn't go in. A header by Karim went in at the bottom of the crossbar. Not much later it was again Karim who hit the bar with a header, after which Kaan Tanriver was miraculously kept from scoring. So PSV continued to press and it was waiting for the equalizer. But...... PSV made things unnecessarily difficult for themselves when they had to continue with 10 men after 48 minutes of play. Jordan Teze was sent off with an immediate red card when he held the striker and prevented him from getting through to Aaron. The awarded free kick didn't do NAC any good, but a few seconds later the ball was in the net at the other end when Matthias used his strong body after a long pass from behind to free himself and shoot the 2-2 easily. With 10 men it was suddenly possible.....
Even with 10 against 11, most of the game was played in Breda's half. And even with 10 men, we had chances. But the absolute sharpness was still lacking. And the Breda goalkeeper was very lucky that his leg, hand or other part of his body just hit the ball every time. Because he regularly saw a PSV player appear only in front of him. A football cliché says it all: "You'll just see it fall on the other side," and that is exactly what happened. Out of nowhere, the NAC striker cleverly scored the 3-2 about 6 minutes before time.
As PSV failed to score despite frantic efforts, they suffered yet another point loss in an away match. Totally unnecessary if you look at the odds (a handful for NAC and one abacus was not enough for PSV), and also know that PSV played part of the match with 10 men. But facts do not lie: the final score after 70 minutes was 3-2 for NAC Breda, which by this result passed PSV on the league table.
