The report
On this beautiful Saturday afternoon in January, Mark van Bommel's boys had a cup match on the schedule. The opponent was FC Twente, which operates in a lower league.
PSV started the match well and created many chances in the early stages. In the 10th minute, Zakaria Aboukhlal played the ball from the back line to the free Justin Lonwijk, but his shot was blocked by an FC Twente player. In the 13th minute it was on the left that the fast Amar Catic with a good action reached the back line where again the free Lonwijk was found. He shot in hard, but via a leg of an FC Twente defender this beautiful attack was not rewarded with a goal either. In the 22nd minute there was a counter attack by the guests from Enschede. This attack was stopped by a PSV defender, but whether a foul was committed remains to be seen. FC Twente claimed a penalty. PSV had a few more good opportunities, but either the goalkeeper was in the way or the goal attempts went just wide. In the 40th minute, PSV O19 finally seemed to score. Joel Piroe played a nice through ball to Catic, who fired it into the goalkeeper's fists from a difficult angle. The deflected ball ended up at the feet of Lonwijk, but he shot the ball onto the top of the crossbar in front of an empty goal. So it seemed that the half-time score was going to be 0-0. But in the 42nd minute it was Leandro Fernandes who reached Maxime Soulas with a nice cross. He hit the ball half with his head, but into the feet of Lonwijk. Lonwijk cut free and shot the 1-0. With this deserved lead, both teams went to tea.
In the second half it was again one-way traffic towards the FC Twente goal, only the sharpness was lacking in principle. In the 52nd minute the goal did come. A free kick from the side was laid back with the head by Lonwijk. The ball went to the free Piroe and the PSV O19 striker usually knows how to take advantage of this opportunity. He headed the 2-0 into the ropes. PSV continued to dictate the game after this goal, because FC Twente simply could not make a real game out of it. This gave PSV's staff the opportunity to give the players some rest and make use of the substitutes. They all filled in well and that is a good sign, because it shows that Mark Bommel has a wide selection at his disposal. In the 68th minute Maxime Delanghe had to make a save after a shot, but the game ended in a good victory for O19, which is now another round in the cup tournament.
A league match is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, away against FC Utrecht.
