In the beginning of the match, both teams were still searching. The first serious attack was by PSV in the 11th minute but this attack was repelled. From the quick counterattack, AZ scored the 1-0. PSV equalized two minutes later. A cross from Milan van de Riet was shot in by Dyon to make it 1-1. PSV went on the attack again immediately after the kick-off and got the next opportunity. Jesper shot the ball just over. Both teams continued to look for opportunities on both sides. In the 27th minute the home club took the lead again. After a quick attack on the right the cross was tapped in, 2-1. With this score both teams went to rest.

AZ started the second half strongly and within five minutes AZ already had two chances to extend the lead further. The first opportunity was a shot that Niek tapped over. The second opportunity was a peal from an AZ player but now it was the crossbar that gave PSV a helping hand. AZ kept PSV under pressure and in this phase of the match PSV struggled. Only after more than ten minutes in the second half could PSV do something back. A free kick by Mohamed went just over and a shot was tapped into a corner. In the 51st minute, PSV equalized. A corner kick by Mohamed was headed in by Jesper from over 12 meters, 2-2. After this equalizer, both teams felt that a victory was up for grabs. This certainly helped the match and produced an exciting final phase. In the 56th minute, it was AZ that was close to a goal. A free kick from AZ's half went over PSV's defense. An AZ player came alone in front of Niek but the ball was shot just wide. The game went up and down and both teams had opportunities. In the last 10 minutes AZ went on the attack but PSV got the best chances because AZ gave away too much space in the back. PSV was dangerous several times but it was Mylian who came closest to scoring with a free kick from outside the penalty area. The ball was shot hard at the far post, but the AZ goalie was just able to prevent a goal. Well into injury time, PSV again got a free kick outside the penalty area. From over 20 meters, Mylian shot the ball hard and clear into the right corner, 2-3. There was too little time for AZ to come back and PSV took the three points back to Eindhoven.

A match in which the devil was clearly in the tail. Both teams were emphatically looking for victory in the final phase of the match. However, it was PSV that eventually returned home with the victory.
