PSV A1 - Sparta A1 turned out to be a strange match. A match in which both sides kept each other in balance. This in contrast to the earlier away game where the Spartans were supreme.
In the period of the 1st half where Sparta had a slight field advantage, PSV managed to open the scoring after a nice rush by Wouter Smeets on the left side of the pitch and a good cross. Lars Hutten was able to put this goal to his name.
Sparta's counter goal came from a covering error by Ridney Cairo that gave Sparta's right forward too much space to come up and cut towards goal. Kelle Roos was defenseless.
The second goal in the match for PSV was scored by Nigel Hasselbaink. However Sparta managed to equalize again after PSV missed a chance to increase the score.
After a nasty tackle on Jasper Waalkens there was some commotion which resulted in Freek Heerkens getting his 2nd yellow card and having to leave the field with red. Sparta smelled its chances and started to play in even higher gear. After all, the result of this match and the program next week of the direct competitors, Feyenoord and AZ, could mean a possible championship for Sparta.
In the end, PSV managed to limit the score by bringing in two substitutes, Martijn Thomassen and Moussa Mahamed.
