After only 30 seconds, PSV had an imposing chance to put the visitors behind. The AZ goalie saved their effort to prevent an early lead for PSV. After this flashy start by PSV, the visitors took control. This gave the visitors the lead in the seventh minute. A back pass to the PSV goalie was intercepted by an AZ player and he shot the 0-1. Three minutes later, the visitors could have doubled the lead. However, a shot went just over. In the twelfth minute, AZ was more effective again. A shot from outside the box went through the hands of the PSV goalie into the crossbar, 0-2. PSV struggled in this phase of the match and did not play football. Only after twenty minutes did PSV bite off the bullet and had two good opportunities to score the tying goal. A nice attack was eventually tapped just wide and a bit later a shot was turned away by the AZ goalkeeper. Just when PSV was getting into the game, AZ delivered the final blow. AZ captured the ball in the 23rd minute and an AZ player tapped the ball in over Kevin Gadellaa, 0-3.
PSV's confidence ebbed away although PSV continued to look for a goal. In the 26th minute, PSV was close to a goal. A free kick from Mohamed Nassoh almost went in at the far post but again the AZ goalie turned away the effort. The visitors continued to look for more goals, however, and more than five minutes before halftime they scored again. A foul within the PSV penalty area on an AZ player was punished with a penalty kick that was shot in, 0-4. PSV went into the break with this large deficit.
PSV took the initiative from the beginning of the second half. In the first ten minutes of the second half, this resulted in three good chances. A shot went just wide, a shot went just over and a header was turned away by the AZ goalkeeper. In the 46th minute the deserved goal of honor came for PSV. After a foul on Milan van de Riet in the AZ penalty area, the ball went to the penalty spot. Milan shot the penalty himself, 1-4. PSV continued the game and was on top but could not really make a game out of it. AZ was also unable to break through in this phase. In the last 10 minutes of the match PSV started to take more risks but did not create any real chances. Because PSV started to take more risks, the visitors still had some opportunities. They did not score either, so after 70 minutes the scoreboard was 1-4.
