The report
At a very unusual part of the year, almost the end of June, the O15 of PSV and FC Volendam were still playing each other in league play. Due to various circumstances, the match was 'thrown out' every time until now. Despite the fact that the match was no longer about anything, the KNVB decided that this match still had to be played. All that was at stake was that if PSV won, they would pass Feyenoord in the final standings to finish third. Volendam had to win by ten goals to change places in the league table with PSV. So this match was not entirely 'just for show' either. A month ago a winning goal by the home team in the final minute made it 2-1 in Volendam. Would PSV be able to give everything this last match and keep the three points in Eindhoven?
In any case, the start was perfect: Dyon Dorenbosch opened in the second minute on the left to Mohamed Nassoh, who crossed hard and tight. In two instances the ball landed at the feet of Dylan Hopman who scored from close range: 1-0. PSV remained the better team after the quick opening goal and created a beautiful attack in the 9th minute. Unfortunately at the end Milan van de Riet just did not get the ball to go nicely towards goal. After Volendam threatened Jules Janssen's goal twice, PSV was dangerous again. This time Milan hit the goalkeeper. Just before half time they did score and again Mohamed was at the basis of the goal. After Dylan reached the free Mohamed on the left with a cross pass, Mohamed sent in a fine cross that Milan cleverly headed in: 2-0.
After halftime, PSV pushed to quickly put the game in the locker. But post and goalkeeper stood in the way of a third Eindhoven goal. Mohamed, in particular, was unlucky not to be able to finish. Because Jules saved a couple of times on Volendam efforts, no more goals were scored after halftime. PSV thus won, finishing third in the final standings. It gained 50 points in 26 games with a goal difference of +29 (52-23). Top scorer of the team this season was Milan van de Riet who scored seventeen goals.
This was the last league game of the season and thus my last report. Thanks everyone for last season, good luck next season and have a nice vacation!
