As the final match of the 2008-2009 season, PSV E1 faced Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. After an excellent series of tournaments and a particularly successful barbeque, this dessert of the season proved to be one course too many.
After a long journey, the match got underway on a light green-dark green striped pitch at the stroke of noon.
The first 5 minutes were evenly matched with chances back and forth. But out of a counter Bayer L. manages to score the first goal, and this is the beginning of a rain of goals that continues over three halves (well 'thirds' then). The Bayer boys are physically extremely fit, combining to their heart's content and shooting with sharpness. Arne and Stan stand firm, but together with the defense they cannot prevent that in the end there are 14 goals on the scoreboard and only 1 for PSV (a nice one by Björn in combination with Roland).
The PSV E1 guys want to but it didn't work out. Where the Bayer boys let the ball do the work, the technically clever individual actions mostly resulted in a lot of ball loss, and then in a blink of an eye the Bayer men were back in front of the goalkeeper who could take the ball out of the net again.
No, this was not the football end of the season as we had imagined, and players, parents and coaching staff looked rather glum after the game with a long journey home still ahead.
So while the season may have turned out to be just one game too long, the entire season is one that the boys and their coaching staff can look back on with great pride. A nice championship, and a first place finish at PSCK's highly competitive tournament in Wormer were the highlights. The boys learned a lot and most of all they had a lot of fun!
