PSV started the match well and led 2-0 after only 15 minutes. In the first half, however, Vitesse equalized. In the second half, both teams had some opportunities to score, but they did not capitalize so both teams had to settle for one point.
The first chance in the sixth minute of the match was for PSV and this chance was immediately taken advantage of. Luc Netten played a nice diagonal ball to Ruben van Bommel. Eventually the ball came to the feet of Jesper Uneken who shot low, 1-0. PSV then continued and in the 13th minute this resulted in another goal. A cross from Bram Rovers was shot in by Chahid el Allachi, but the Vitesse goalie was able to turn it away. In the rebound Jesper Uneken shot in, 2-0. PSV was in control of the match and the home club gave Vitesse no chance to get into the game. In the 17th minute Jesper Uneken could have put the game away for good, but his shot went over. After that, Vitesse got into the game better and the visitors went in search of the tying goal. In the 24th minute Vitesse had the first chance of the match, but the shot by a Vitesse player was blocked by Livano Comenencia. One minute later, Vitesse managed to score the tying goal. A free kick near the corner flag was headed in by a Vitesse player, 2-1. Vitesse felt there was more to come and went in search of the equalizer. The visitors often used the long ball to put their fast forwards in position. This succeeded in the 33rd minute. PSV lost the ball unnecessarily in midfield and a deep ball was sent away by the Vitesse striker. At first Niek Schiks managed to turn away the effort, but then the PSV goalie was defenseless and Vitesse scored the equalizer, 2-2.
Vitesse started the second half brighter and PSV trailed early in the second half. In the 40th minute, a Vitesse player was able to dribble through the PSV defense undisturbed and shoot at goal. However, Kjell Peersman saved the effort. Vitesse continued to press and PSV had no answer. Vitesse did not create many chances, but it did have an advantage in this phase of the match. PSV could only come back after fifteen minutes in the second half, but the Vitesse goalie managed to turn away the effort. PSV had a few more opportunities after that but PSV lacked the conviction in the second half to capitalize on these opportunities. Vitesse also had some opportunities but the visitors were unable to create any real danger. Both teams ran out of steam so both had to settle for one point.
