The second league match was scheduled this weekend. Opponent: ADO Den Haag. After last week's spectacle (4-4 against Feyenoord), the Eindhoven team faced a team that also played a goal-rich game in the previous league round. The guests from The Hague lost 3-2 at Sc Heerenveen. A match with many goals seemed almost guaranteed.
The start was hopeful from that perspective. After a corner by Mathijs Tielemans, the ball ended up with Jason Pigmans, whose shot hit the crossbar. PSV's corners were dangerous today. Joost de Schutter headed the ball over in the 7th minute and later in the 1st half Jayden Braaf was almost successful.
By then the score was already 1-0 for the home team. A corner in the 21st minute was taken short and finally crossed where the ball was headed in at the 2nd post via the inside of the post.
Once again PSV had to chase the lead. They were fortunate that ADO missed an opportunity in the 27th minute when a PSV pass was misjudged.
Just before halftime, PSV had two more chances to equalize. The biggest was for Jayden who after a good, individual action came 1 on 1 with the long ADO goalkeeper. With his long legs he could only just save the goal. In the penultimate minute Thomas Cox did well on the right flank and gave Kees van Lindert the chance to score against his old club. Again the keeper saved by turning his shot into the short corner.
In the 2nd half, PSV was clearly the superior side. It had the ball most of the time and the game was mainly played on The Hague side. Yet ADO almost made it 2-0 when an Eindhoven throw-in near their own corner flag was very easily handed to an ADO player. Fortunately goalkeeper Robin Verhoeven was able to save the ball.
The equalizer hung in the air and finally came in the 55th minute. After a good interception by Thomas, the ball went to Jason who set up the attack together with Jayden. Jayden passed his opponent and was not selfish by putting the ball wide at the right moment to Jason who could easily tap in: 1-1.
Two minutes later, PSV even took the lead. Good preparatory work by the substitute Fodé Fofana was expertly rounded off at the first post by Jur Clabbers who made his first contact with the ball and tapped it into the net: 1-2!
PSV finally had its lead. And almost extended it to 1-3. A beautiful attack was put on the pitch: Kees sent Jayden in deep. His cross was headed in while floating by Mathijs. Unfortunately the ball went just over, because that would have been a great goal after a ditto attack.
Because Joep Kluskens also just before the end of the match was too high with his shot, the match ended 1-2. A deserved victory for PSV that kept it exciting (too) long and could have put the game in the lock at an earlier stage. It showed good positional play at times, and the team needs to hold on to that.
