  1. Match report

PSV D1 needed to rectify last week's slip against NAC Breda on Saturday. Another point loss would possibly bring the competition even closer.

In the early stages, there was little to get excited about. The teams are searching and do not create much. But gradually, without playing great, PSV gets some opportunities. A long-running attack ends with a cross from Lennerd Daneels, which is just not hit properly by Mink Peeters. The next danger comes from Lennerd who sees his shot from the penalty area, after a combination between Mink, Joey Konings and Roel van Linschoten, stopped by the goalkeeper. Then there are opportunities for Joey and Dante Rigo (via a nice shot), but neither of them scores. Five minutes before halftime the goal is finally scored. A fine individual action by Matthias Verreth is completed by the Belgian striker with a shot into the corner: 1-0. Shortly before halftime it was even 2-0 when a nice one-two between Mink and Joey was well shot by the latter. PSV goes into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

After half time PSV gets a number of opportunities to increase the score. First Matthias sprinted into the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper, but he hit the post. Then the fists of the goalkeeper are tested by successively Mink, Matthias and again Mink. The next opportunity fell to Ties van den Eijnde, who shot wide. So the 3-0 is in the air but it is the opponent who scores. And again it is a standard situation, a free kick high up in the goal, that does PSV in. After the 2-1, PSV lost the initiative for about ten minutes and Fortuna took over. The Limburgers come very close to an equalizer twice and eventually the 2-2 falls through an unfortunate own goal after a Fortuna corner. It looked as if PSV were going to lose another point, but the PSV team got back on track and started a final offensive. They started to play football again and chances started to appear. First Mink's effort after a Joey cross was saved by the goalkeeper, but the next attack was successful. Dante Rigo takes a free kick that Joey heads in. It is 3-2 and it does not stop there. From a corner by Mink, Mats Grotenbreg, who just entered the game, put the 4-2 score on the scoreboard. A deserved victory for PSV that tastes even better because rivals Willem II/RKC (draw) and NAC Breda (loss) both lost points.
