PSV D1 won a hard-fought, but well-deserved 1-2 victory against Fortuna Sittard D1 in their Friday evening match.
Fortuna Sittard started the game well and could have opened the score within one minute, but Joep van Vroenhoven prevented this by heading a tight cross from the left side with his red hair just in front of Fortuna's opponent. This warning was still not enough for PSV to wake up and Sven van de Kerkhof had his hands and feet full with the dangerous left striker of Fortuna, which he did better and better as the game progressed.
Halfway through the first half, Jorrit Hendrix sent his mate Endy Opoku Bernadina well away in the depths, Endy beat two defenders at speed and slid the 0-1 in under control. PSV continued to struggle with Fortuna's fierce opposition, however, with the PSV defense managing to prevent a goal with a great deal of skill. After the break, PSV immediately put the opponent under strong pressure in the freezing cold Sittard, but it was Fortuna that scored the equalizer from one of the sparse counters. PSV stepped up the pressure and after a nice move by Aron Schnorrenberg from the right side, Endy scored his second goal of the evening. Unfortunately, on the advice of Fortuna's linesman, the referee disallowed this goal, and according to many, completely unfairly. What a setback! PSV did not give up and when Endy was flagged down inside the sixteen-meter area by a Fortuna defender, everyone except the referee thought about a penalty. PSV did not let themselves be discouraged by the referee's increasingly confused whistle and ten minutes before time, the tandem Endy and Michael struck mercilessly. Endy played Michael free in the sixteen and Michael Maria, for his own unique way, rounded an opponent before scoring in a controlled manner.
Shortly before time, Jordi de Wijs soloed beautifully through the Fortuna defense, but unfortunately the post prevented a third valid goal. Fortuna was not dangerous anymore and PSV D1 starts the winter hibernation as leader thanks to this narrow victory.
Happy holidays to all and see you all in 2008!
