In this open match, both teams had opportunities to take the win. In the first half, PSV had a slight advantage. In the second half, Ajax was the better side. In the end, Ajax pulled the longest straw and won the match 2-1.
PSV started the match well and from the kickoff it already had a best chance. However, the effort was turned away by the Ajax goalie. PSV had several more opportunities after that, but they were not played well. Ajax put PSV under pressure early on, but PSV easily played their way out of it. The first chance for the visitors was in the 17th minute. The effort was turned away by the PSV goalie. One minute later, a PSV shot went against the post and the rebound was turned away by the Ajax goalie. After PSV failed to capitalize on a chance in the 22nd minute, the deserved lead came in the 25th minute. A quick throw-in to Sven Simons was laid wide to Chahid el Allachi. With a peal from the edge of the penalty area, Chahid shot the ball high into the goal, 1-0. PSV persevered after that and three minutes before halftime PSV had the opportunity to double the lead. A beautifully taken free kick by Sven Simons initially hit the crossbar, in the rebound the ball was worked just wide.
Ajax took the initiative from the beginning of the second half. PSV fell behind and lost their grip on the match. In the 45th minute, Ajax equalized as a cross was tapped in, 1-1. Four minutes later, Ajax took the lead. A corner initially went past everyone. However, an Ajax player picked up the ball and shot into the far corner to make it 1-2. Ajax continued to have the better of the game after that and had several opportunities to put the game away for good. These opportunities were not taken advantage of. In the last ten minutes of the match, PSV tried to force the equalizer. A free kick was tapped in too softly and a shot went over the visitors' goal. One minute before time, an Ajax player managed to clear a PSV corner just in time, and in injury time PSV had the best chance to equalize. However, the ball was shot over the goal, leaving them empty-handed.
