The very last league game of the 2015-2016 season was scheduled this weekend. How the season has flown by! Opponent: Fc Volendam. The number 11 of the league table. A team we drew 1-1 against at the end of November at De Herdgang.
Would the Eindhoven formation be able to show its strength once more in this 26th league game? At the Kras Stadion the weather conditions were very different from last weekend or last week. Where it was warm then with a lovely sun, today it was time for the winter coat again.
At the Kras Stadion, PSV quickly took the initiative. After missing the first chance in the 7th minute (shot by Damian Timan went wide), it took the lead two minutes later. Thijs Martens received the ball near the Volendam dugout and rushed past his opponent. Inside the 16, he shot the ball perfectly into the far corner: 0-1.
A minute later it was already 0-2. A cross from Beslan Sagov was touched with the hand by a Volendam defender inside the 16 meters and so PSV got a penalty. Captain Damian Timan took care of this and did not fail. PSV was thus quickly in a seat en route to 3 points.
For a moment Volendam seemed to get back in the game when after almost fifteen minutes of play the outside right put the ball back and gave a fellow player an almost unmissable chance. Almost..... because he shot outside the post wide.
PSV locked up the game in the 20th minute. And how! Dennis Vos took a free kick on the right and hurled it into the 16. Right at Mees Kreekels who took the ball well and put it back some 20 meters to Dennis who had passed. Dennis didn't think twice and took a hard shot and the ball plopped into the top left corner. A great goal!
Also after this goal, PSV remained by far the better team. It was sloppy and nonchalant in the final phase otherwise the score would have increased further before the halftime signal. Yorbe Vertessen , for example, after a good cross from Dennis Vos, hit the outstretched leg of the Volendam goalie. And Mathijs was unfortunate when his effort was turned into a corner by a Volendam foot.
With a 0-3 lead both teams went to the dressing room, and the home team was happy with that score.
The level was lower in the second half. Still, PSV created quite a few opportunities. Mathijs Bel's cross was plucked out of the air by the goalkeeper, and Yorbe's shot went wide.
In the 49th minute the score was still 0-4. This time Yorbe's shot hit the post, but in the rebound Beslan Sagov managed to score anyway.
Yorbe did not seem to have his afternoon today. Because a few minutes after the 0-4, he saw his shot with the left go just over the crossbar. And with 10 minutes to go he was sent deep by Mohamed Nassoh, rounded the goalkeeper but found himself in an awkward corner. His ball back to Mohamed was good, but he saw his shot miraculously cleared off the goal line by an orange defender.
In the last 5 minutes, PSV had a few more chances. But the departing Stijn van der Put (who took over as captain after his substitution) was not given the chance to crown his farewell with a goal. STIJN THANKS!
Thus, PSV won by large numbers and finished 5th in the league. With as many points as #4 AZ (43 points), but with a less goal difference: 65 for and 43 against.
The 65 goals were scored by 12 different players. The most treacherous was Yorbe Vertessen with 17 goals. Followed by Damian Timan and Beslan Sagov with 9 goals each.
The biggest victory was at home against Willem II (8-0), the biggest defeat was away at Sparta (4-0). And in 4 of the 26 matches PSV failed to find the net. Also 4 times the zero was kept, defensively speaking then.....Further for the statisticians: the team received 13 yellow cards, and once a PSV player immediately received a red card. Mees Kreekels has the dubious honor of having collected the most cards (4x yellow) and Shurandy Sambo the only player sent off with a direct red card.
It remains for me to thank every player, staff member, parent and others involved for the past season: thank you!
