PSV played the home match against Roda JC on Saturday at a drizzling Herdgang. With their stiff play, the opponent managed to hold the game for a large part and prevent PSV from becoming dangerous, although Roda was unable to create anything in attack. From the handful of chances that PSV got, they managed to score twice in almost identical fashion, both times because Roda was surprised in the organization by rising defenders.
The 1-0 fell early in the first half when defender Rico was given all the space he needed to engage offensively. With the ball at foot, he rounded an opponent in the Limburg penalty area at speed, then from the back line brought the ball tightly and low for the goal. The incoming Sem was quick to work the excellent cross in at the first post, 1-0.
PSV had to be patient until deep into the second half to express the difference in strength in goals. After substitute Arne almost headed in from a corner by Davy shortly after halftime, which was tapped over fine by the goalkeeper, it was time for another defender to confuse Roda by engaging offensively. In the 51st minute, Sekou, with a great move, outmaneuvered his opponent from position at speed before laying the ball at the 2nd post, where the up-and-coming Gregory took it full on his slipper but saw it splattered on the post. 10 minutes later it was a winner. Arne sent Gregory deep on the outside right with a nice cross, who then played the ball across the ground to Joop, who was completely free in front of the goal and tapped in his first effort of the season, 2-0.
A tough match in which PSV was quite effective given the limited number of chances and defensively gave away nothing at all. Despite the moderate match, O16 has excellent report cards so far. With the maximum number of points from 3 games and a goal difference of + 13 -without a single goal- the team is alone at the top and is on a collision course to qualify for the champions pool in the 2nd half of the competition. Next week the O16 plays the away game against Brabant United.
