This match was cancelled on February 14.
Third placed DVS had posted on the PSV E2 site congratulations for the championship and announced to do everything in their power to keep us from that 250th goal today. They put their money where their mouth was; it became a match of DVS resistance and PSV missed chances. Our boys were not lacking in commitment, technique, combination football and solo actions, but the ball would not go in easily. This was partly due to careless play, especially in the first half, but also due to the incessant effort of the DVS players and the goalkeeper. The modest DVS party afterwards in the canteen was therefore more than deserved.
After each player of the sporty DVS had received a yellow bunch of champion's roses, and had placed it in the water bag, the match started. The trio of Jordan, Robin and Ruud made several fearsome appearances and it took about five minutes until the first goal fell. Robin gave a wide pass to the free-flowing Ruud, who deftly fired the ball in. So, six more goals, was the common thought. For a moment the idea even came up to leave the pleasantly seated covered stand to take position at the DVS goal, so that we would witness the goals from closer range.
But things turned out differently. Only shortly before halftime the second goal fell. Robin was played free and shot in low and hard with the left. In the meantime there was danger in front of both goals. Our defense also knew how to deal with this and repeatedly we applauded beautiful defensive actions by Armando, Lars J. and Lars D. The best defensive action was by Pepijn. He stopped a strong long-distance shot with his foot, and immediately afterwards he tapped over a header with his hand and neatly caught the subsequent corner. Class!
The attackers Ruud, Cody and Robin did not let themselves go either. If they got past the defense with their fine attacking work, there was always the goalkeeper. The flowing combo Cody and Jordan that is otherwise so successful encountered the same problem. Lars J. and Lars D. were too busy defending to support the attack. Armando made a frantic attempt with his famous distance shot, but the ball was kept out by a defender. Finally, the combo Ruud and Cody was successful. Ruud worked the cross in perfectly; the 246th goal.
In the meantime DVS had hit the post, Lars J. had cleared the ball off the line and Lars D. prevented a breakthrough by neatly intercepting the ball. In the last minutes our boys gave it some extra gas, Jordan stood eye to eye with the goalkeeper and Cody shot over and wide. To no avail, it remained 0-3.
Compliments to DVS for their unbridled, sporting effort in this match. Eight kudos to the players of E2 and a compliment to coach Twan Scheepers (and his coaches) who not only made a good footballing team, but also a tight, strong group of boys who are willing to go with and for each other.
