In order not to let the difference at the top of the premier league become too big, it was important for A1 to finish the home match against Ajax victoriously.
However, both teams did not want to take any chances and therefore the first half was limited to a few teases. Josha Brenet came through well on the right, but his cross lacked sharpness. On the Ajax side, it was Fennich who saw a shot at the PSV goal go wide.
The second half offered considerably more spectacle. PSV came forward a bit more threateningly. Geraldo Antonio headed a cross into the goalkeeper's hands. Moments later it was Jorrit Hendrix who initiated an attack with a long pass to Zakaria Bakkali. However, the latter could not get through and had to turn back. Wouter Soomer then crossed the ball and Geraldo Antonio's shot could only just be turned away by the goalkeeper. Then it was the turn of Mohamed Rayhi, who shot a cross from Elvio van Overbeek just wide.
There were also chances on the Ajax side. In an attack on the right, Jorrit Hendrix was barely able to intercept the cross. The ball was smothered, however, and the Ajax striker then hit the crossbar.
Zakaria Bakkali did a good job of picking up a ball in midfield, but when playing it back to the goalkeeper he overlooked the retreating Ajax attacker. With much artifice, Nigel Bertrams managed to prevent a goal.
It turned out to be a stay of execution, because moments later Ajax got the full win anyway. On the right side, Ajax's Fisher came through. Riechedly Bazoer did intervene, but in the tangle Fisher got the ball anyway and was able to shoot in at the far corner.
With the few minutes remaining, coach Libregts' team failed to score again.
