The report
PSV struggled with De Graafschap throughout the match. PSV fell behind in the first half, but managed to erase the deficit. After PSV fell behind again in the second half, they were unable to win the match. In the end, PSV lost the match 2-4.
Both teams started the match energetically and this produced several chances on both sides. The first chance was in the second minute for PSV. After a nice attack a player of the visitors was only just able to intercept the cross and a goal-ready opportunity was denied. In the fifth minute the visitors took the lead. PSV easily lost the ball in the back, allowing a De Graafschap player to easily slot in, 0-1. A few minutes later PSV had a great chance to equalize, but the ball was shot just wide. Moments later the visitors were close to a goal but the PSV goalie saved the effort. PSV had a difficult time with De Graafschap. The visitors put pressure early so PSV did not get into the game for a moment. Nevertheless, PSV equalized in the 19th minute. PSV gained possession of the ball on the edge of the penalty area. Shi-jon Martina tapped the ball nicely through to Jesper Uneken. Jesper got free in front of the goalkeeper but it laid the ball wide allowing Ruben van Bommel to score the 1-1. PSV had a slight advantage for a short period and created two good chances, but twice the goalie of the visitors was a barrier.
The first chance in the second half was for PSV in the 37th minute, but the cross was headed over. In the 42nd minute, the visitors took the lead again after sloppy ball loss by PSV in midfield. A De Graafschap player got free in front of the PSV goalie and did not miss this opportunity, 1-2. The visitors did not let PSV get into the game and with a lot of running people, De Graafschap was dangerous on several occasions. PSV had no answer to that game and were constantly behind. In the 50th minute, De Graafschap put the game away for good. After a quick attack the cross was headed in, 1-3. PSV tried to do something back but looked powerless. The few chances that PSV managed to create were not taken advantage of. De Graafschap went one step further and even managed to increase the margin. With a long ball, the De Graafschap goalkeeper released a player in front of the PSV goalie. He laid the ball wide to a fellow player who scored the 1-4 goal. Three minutes before time Iggy Houben managed to score the 2-4 but this goal was only for the statistics.
