The report
The second league match for PSV O15 was scheduled at De Herdgang. After last week's victory over Ajax (0-2), this round's opponent once again came from North Holland: FC Volendam. The wide boys lost to FC Utrecht at home last weekend. Would PSV be able to keep the three points at home?
At least the first chance was for PSV when Ruben van Bommel almost took advantage of a wrong pass from the Volendam goalkeeper in the 2nd minute. After 15 minutes of play, the home side got its second chance when, after a quick, smoothly running attack, striker Jesper Uneken slid the ball just wide. Finally, it took until the 19th minute before PSV took the lead. Iggy Houben was sent away on the right and his cross was converted into a goal by Jesper: 1-0. A few minutes later Jesper seemed to head in the 2-0, but his effort went wide. PSV had more opportunities to score the second goal before halftime. Ruben was (wrongly?) whistled back for offside after a good attack and Iggy saw his shot go just wide. Finally, Ruben headed a measured cross from Iggy against the crossbar. No goals were scored, so both teams went to the dressing rooms with a one goal margin.
After halftime, PSV immediately had a great opportunity, but the substitute Matteo Dams looked for the goal too high. Then the level dropped a bit. PSV played messy and sloppy and slowly lost its dominance. Still, in the 55th minute it had three chances in the same attack to put the game in the lock. For a while it seemed like a shooting gallery in front of the Volendam goal (which could be excellently true since it was Volendam Fair this weekend): Chahid el Allachi again sent Iggy into the depths but he pounced on the goalkeeper. In the rebound Jesper also shot against the goalkeeper after which Iggy had another chance to shoot on goal. Unfortunately, he produced only a little roll so no goal was scored. And then there is still the football rule "if you don't score yourself, then..... and that also happened today. Less than a minute after PSV scored three times to make it 2-0, it was suddenly 1-1 after Volendam's left winger shot the ball beautifully into the top corner. PSV had to work to prevent losing points at home. And it worked! Because barely three minutes after the equalizer, the home team took the lead again. Shi-jon Martina received the ball on the sideline, passed several Volendammers as if they were not there and shot hard at goal. Via the goalie's fingertips the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and the smallest player on the field was able to head it in: 2-1. A few minutes before the end, PSV scored again. A well taken free kick by Milan Govaers was nicely headed into the net by Iggy at the first post.
A deserved victory today for the team of Edwin de Wijs and Anthony Lurling who seemed to make things unnecessarily difficult for themselves midway through the second half but regained their focus just in time. Next weekend the away game at Feyenoord. Once again a great affair.
