Duel overshadowed by injury to Fofana
Saturday the home match was scheduled against NAC Breda. Suddenly this became an important match for us. With Ajax gaining only one point in the last few games, the deficit on leaders Feyenoord could be reduced to five points with three games to go.
PSV took control right from the start. With good combination football the team from Breda was put under pressure. This resulted in the first goal after only five minutes. After good action by Dennis Vos the ball ended up in the hands of Richard Ledezma. The ball ended up in the goal.
After this, PSV kept the better of the game, gave away few chances, but forgot to expand the score. The biggest chance was for Nigel Thomas. A long ball in the 27th minute from Sambo allowed him to play himself free nicely, but eye to eye with the goalkeeper he failed. Not much later, Ledezma just missed a good cross from Thomas. A good first half for Ruud van Nistelrooy's team. Yet in the 34th minute it was NAC Breda that equalized. The ball landed on the edge of the sixteen meter and at that moment goalkeeper Kyan van Dorp had already left to narrow his goal. But with a nice foot movement, the NAC striker lifted the ball over Van Dorp: 1-1. Just before half-time the PSV goalkeeper did prevent a counter-goal with a good save.
In the second half, PSV went in search of the 2-1 lead. It created a number of opportunities in the early stages, but each time the NAC goalkeeper was in the way. Chances by Thomas, Kreekels and Sidibe went nowhere.
PSV was the better, yet it seemed to be heading for a draw. In injury time, the match took a very negative turn. Fodé Fofana was sent into the depths, got off balance in dueling with the goalkeeper and a defender and made a wrong turn. Because of this injury, the match was called off early and we are left with nothing less than to wish Fodé much strength in his recovery.
PSV O19's next match is next Saturday at 2 p.m. at home against NEC from Nijmegen.
