PSV played the final league game of the season at home against FC Twente on Saturday. It was a reflection of the season, in which PSV alternated an excellent 1st half with a less good 2nd, although in that one the team managed to come back well from the 0-2 deficit that it fell behind against the odds.
PSV created some great opportunities in the first half, but failed to capitalize on them and take a deserved lead. In the 12th minute, striker Vincent Bogaerts put the incoming Yaell Hattu free in front of the goalie with a beautiful cross, but his shot ended up on the wrong side of the post next to the goal. Moments later, Arnaut Groeneveld entered the Twente penalty area after a good combination and put the ball ready at the far post for the free Elmo Hertogh, who nevertheless hastily shot wide. Although Twente had not been in any danger up to that point, in the 28th minute they took advantage of Eindhoven's ball loss in midfield, and made the most of the quick changeover by shooting in the 0-1 behind the hopeless Youri Roulaux. After the referee sent off a Twente player with his 2nd yellow card shortly before halftime, Yaell Hattu had the equalizer on his foot. He shot the awarded free kick from 20 meters directly at goal but saw his kick end up on the post.
Although PSV had a little less grip in the 2nd half, they also created a number of good chances. Fifteen minutes after the break, Karim Bannani had a huge chance when the ball rebounded off the post after a good move by Arnaut Groeneveld, but he rushed the ball wide of the crossbar. Once again, Twente then showed great effectiveness. From one of the few counterattacks that followed, the guests easily made it 0-2. Despite the disappointing run of play and the knowledge that nothing more was at stake, PSV managed to make sure in the remaining 25 minutes that the season did not end in defeat. In the 71st minute, Vincent Bogaerts sent Arnaut Groeneveld deep into the net, who beat the outflowing Twente goalkeeper with a fine lob to make it 1-2. After the referee also sent off the Twente striker with a red card for foul play 6 minutes before time, Vincent Bogaerts made it 2-2 when the Twente goalkeeper badly handled a high ball from Tom Scheepers after which the striker shot the ball over the goalkeeper.
The competition is over for the B2. After being the leader for a long time, Kristof Aelbrecht's team finished 5th on the league table behind champion Feyenoord with 40 points from 22 games.
