PSV started the match brightly and that produced a good opportunity as early as the seventh minute. However, the ball was shot just over. The first chance for the home club was in the ninth minute from a corner. The effort was tapped off the line by Dyon Dorenbosch. PSV then took control of the game but did not create many chances. The best opportunity was in the 20th minute. A deep ball from D'Leanu Arts put Milan van de Riet free in front of the Vitesse goalie. The Vitesse goalkeeper, however, turned Milan's effort away. PSV played well and kept pressing but did not score. Vitesse did not create any chances. Both teams went into the break with a score of 0-0.

Two minutes after the start of the second half, the home club was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. The free kick was headed in by a Vitesse player, 1-0. PSV then picked up the good play of the first half and immediately tried to do something back. Two minutes after the opening goal, Mylian Jimenez shot over via the crossbar. PSV continued unabated and, as in the first half, had the game in hand. Vitesse had to go back and PSV had some good chances to score the equalizer. In the 57th minute, a shot from Mylian Jimenez was turned into a corner by the Vitesse goalie. The ensuing corner was headed just wide. In the 64th minute, Dyon Dorenbosch was close to an equalizer but again his effort was turned away by the Vitesse goalie. PSV started to take more risks but did not create any real chances. As PSV started to take more risks, Vitesse got one more opportunity that was not taken. The final score was 1-0 so PSV had to leave the points in Arnhem.
